18 year old Molly Gaskell is thrilled to hear that she is the winner of the Courier and The Cooking School's "Get Cooking Calderdale" campaign. Molly's recipe for Goan Chicken Curry impressed the judges with its use of local ingredients and curry paste made from scratch.
Get Cooking Calderdale was launched by Matthew Benson-Smith, the Director of The Cooking School in January of this year along with the Halifax Evening Courier. The programme was a call to action for the people of Calderdale to be excited about local produce and suppliers and to share the recipes that their families have cooked for years.
A bumper crop of recipes was submitted for the campaign. Molly describes her recipe as Yorkshire Meeting Goa. She says, "The onions, garlic, potatoes and fresh coriander are bought from Hebden Bridge market and are locally sourced. The mint has been grown in our garden and the chillies are from my granddad's greenhouse! The free range chicken has come from Far Barsey farm shop in Barkisland."
Molly has been cooking since she was young, staring with helping her Mum to bake. At 12 she was cooking meals by herself and has progressed her skills over the past 7 years. She loves watching cooking programmes and her favourite chefs are Vietnamese chef Bobby Chin and Iranian Rezza Mohammad.
Molly says she is inspired by Asian Cooking. " I have been to India and few times and Sri Lanka and Thailand and I just think the food is so delicious. I am really happy to have my recipe recognised and hope it does help to Get Calderdale Cooking." Molly's prize packs includes kitchen equipment courtesy of Oxo Good Grips as well as a Cooking School apron and a place on the next Secrets of Prashad course at The Cooking School in August, where she will learn some fantastic vegetarian dishes with Kaushy Patel.
